C.M. Smith was founded on January 1, 1974, by Charles M. Smith after working with other insurance brokerage firms for 15 years.  The cornerstone of the firm was built on three words: knowledge, integrity, and credibility.  In January 2019, C.M. Smith Financial joined Alera Group. 

Alera Group is an independent, national insurance and financial services firm that was created in 2017 when 24 like-minded employee benefits firms partnered to create an organization with hundreds of colleagues at a handful of locations. Through the years, Alera Group has continued to grow, and today is a top-20 broker in four key areas of expertise, with colleagues and locations all across the country.  Alera Group is made up of four national practices including, Property and Casualty, Employee Benefits, Retirement Plan Services and Wealth Services. 

The Hartford, CT office is an integral part of the Wealth Services Team offering comprehensive financial solutions including Life, Disability and Long Term Care Insurance, Executive Benefit Plans, Investment and Retirement accounts, and Financial Planning.
